President of the Sovereignty Council Calls on the International Community to Classify the Rapid Support as a Terrorist Group
New York, September 21, 2023
The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, called on the international community to classify the vicious Rapid Support Forces and the militias allied with them as terrorist groups. He pointed out that they have committed all the crimes that warrant this classification.
Speaking today at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Al-Burhan stressed the need for decisive action against those who support these groups, stating that murder, burning, rape, forced displacement, looting, theft, torture, arms and drug trafficking, mercenary recruitment, and the enlistment of children are all crimes that require accountability and punishment. He emphasized that the legitimate state institutions, including the government, armed forces, and other entities, will not tolerate violations of state sovereignty or the dignity of its people, regardless of the cost.
The President of the Sovereignty Council noted that since April 15th of last year, the Sudanese people have faced a devastating war waged by the rogue Rapid Support Forces and militias allied with various tribal, regional, and international groups. He explained that these forces have recruited mercenaries from around the world to commit heinous crimes against the Sudanese people. They have engaged in killing, plundering, looting, rape, seizing citizens’ homes and properties, destroying civil facilities, including service facilities, hospitals, government offices, and attempted to erase the history and identity of the Sudanese people by attacking museums, historical sites, land records, civil registries, and airports. They have also looted banks and public and private companies and released prisoners and detainees, including those sought for international justice and terrorists. Al-Burhan affirmed that these crimes amount to crimes against humanity and war crimes. He pointed out that what happened in the city of Geneina in West Darfur is a clear example of the grave violations committed by these forces against civilians in Sudan.
The President of the Sovereignty Council clarified that despite all these violations by these forces, the Sudanese government has exhausted all means to stop this war. It responded to every initiative presented by brothers and friends. He mentioned the initiative launched by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States in Jeddah, which made good progress if it weren’t for the obstinacy of the rebels. Alongside the initiative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the initiative of neighboring countries, which convened in Egypt. Al-Burhan renewed his commitment to peace and added, “We are still extending our hands for peace and to stop this war and alleviate the suffering of our people.”
